His film debut was in “Love With the Proper Stranger” (1963) with Steve McQueen and Natalie Wood and directed by his brother Robert, in a small, uncredited role as Louie. His other films included: “One Potato, Two Potato” (1964) as Joe Cullen; “The Group” (1966) as Dick Brown; “The Undefeated” (1969) as Dan Morse; one of his best roles in “Little Big Man” (1970) with Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George, as Gen. George Armstrong Custer; “Visit to a Chief’s Son” (1974) as Robert; “The Big Bus” (1976) as Claude Crane, a hilarious film; “Scavenger Hunt” (1979) as Marvin Dummitz; Blake Edward’s comedy “S.O.B.” (1981) as Felix Farmer, one of his better roles; ” Trail of the Pink Panther” (1982) as Clouseau Sr.; “Teachers” (1984) as Herbert; “Micki and Maude” (1984) with Dudley Moore, as Leo Brody; “Meatballs Part II” (1984) as Giddy; “Doin’ Time” (1985) as Mongo Mitchell; “The Heavenly Kid” (1985) as Rafferty and “A Fine Mess” (1986) as Wayne ‘Turnip’ Parragella, his final theatrical film. On TV he was a regular on the series: “The Hero” (1966-67) as Sam Garrett; “Diana” (1973-74) as Jeff Harmon; “Soap” (1977-81) as Burt Campbell; “Reggie” (1983) as Reggie Potter and “Empty Nest” (1988-95) as Dr. Harry Weston. He won Emmys for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for both “Soap” and “Empty Nest.” He appeared in TV movies including: “Harvey” (1972); “Pueblo” (1973); “Malibu” (1983); “Gore Vidal’s Lincoln” (1988) and “Dog’s Best Friend” (1997). He also guested on such TV series as: “The Rat Patrol”; “Gunsmoke”; “Bonanza”; “The Partridge Family”; “Charlie’s Angels”; “Little House on the Prairie”; “Hunter”; “Twilight Zone”; “Highway to Heaven” and “The Golden Girls” in his role as Dr. Harry Weston. He was married five times. His first wife was Patricia Jones who he married in 1955 and divorced in 1960. They had a son, James. He was married to Joan Hackett from 1965-73 and divorced, married Lenore Stevens in 1978 and divorced, married Serina Robinson, aka Rachel Ryan the porn queen from 1992-93 and divorced and married Rachel Ryan in 1992 who he divorced. He was known as a hard worker and a gentleman by his colleagues. He suffered from diabetes. He died of colon cancer on September 26, 2000 in Los Angeles, California at age 67.
