Marijuana for Diabetes Treatment

Marijuana users are known to go through eating binges, a fact that users of the substance are well aware of. Earlier on researchers noticed that despite a greater calorie intake, marijuana users were generally lower in weight with a reduced incidence of Diabetes. The studies were of tremendous interest not only to the researchers in the field, but to members of the public who were struggling to find some easy way to treat the disease.

The active ingredient in marijuana is THC or tetrahydrocannabinol and it is this ingredient that is believed to have an effect on insulin levels; this is shown by recent studies in the field. The studies although, not conclusive do show definite benefits of marijuana use in the prevention of Diabetes.

  • Insulin levels in marijuana users are significantly lower.
  • They have slimmer waist lines.
  • Elevated levels of the good cholesterol are seen.

The downside is that marijuana use seems to affect only those people positively, who started using it recently, and not those whose use of the drug has continued for an extended period of time.

Further details of these studies are available here…

The fact of the matter is that there is a definite link between marijuana use and type 2 Diabetes. Researchers are still trying to understand exactly how it works because any progress in research might prove to be invaluable in treating what many call the ‘silent killer’.

Further researches need to be conducted to determine the long term effects of marijuana use and see how it affects various segments and races within a society. Furthermore, separate studies with various age groups will have to be carried out to see how they respond to marijuana use.  Suffice it to say, that it is impossible to determine whether marijuana will be used for diabetes treatment in the future. Each study in the field is like a piece of a puzzle, adding to the overall picture which is gradually becoming clearer.
