Project Description
Toby Petersen was born on October 27, 1978 in Minneapolis, MN. Petersen attended Colorado College from 1996-2000 where he played for four years on the Tigers ice hockey team. Upon graduating, Petersen was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. After playing for the Penguins in 2001 and 2002, he spent most of the next four seasons at the minor league level before getting called up to play for Dallas. Petersen currently plays center for the Dallas Stars in his fourth NHL season.
Some highlights from Toby Petersen’s career include winning the 2008 AHL Skills Competition fastest skate event with a 14.001 second lap and scoring on a penalty shot in the 2008 AHL All-Star game.
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 5, Petersen has always been proactive about his diabetes and has made a conscious effort to make testing part of his daily routine. In fact, Petersen tests his blood sugar levels between six and 10 times per day and wears an insulin pump during practices and games. “The material that this is made of is not quite bulletproof but it should be able to absorb a direct slapshot,” he said. Overall, Petersen has adapted a positive outlook about his diabetes. “For the most part I’ve just accepted it. It’s part of my life,” said Petersen.
Toby Petersen has made several contributions to diabetes and in 2004, was nominated by the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins as their 2003-2004 AHL Man of the Year candidate for his work with diabetes charities. Petersen is married, and he and his wife Alexa have a daughter, two-year-old Bjorn.
