Project Description

A golfer by the age of five, Sherri Turner was born in Greenville, South Carolina. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 15 years old, after she was already a junior champion in the golf world. Accustomed to long days of traveling and competing, Turner did not let her diabetes stop her from growing as a golfer.

After attending Furman University, Turner joined the LPGA tour in 1984. In 1988, she had her first career victories winning the LPGA tour and LPGA Corning Classic Tour back-to-back, and also scored her first career hole-in-one. These achievements caused her to be named the Golf Writers Association of America’s Female Player of the Year and also earned her spots in the Furman Athletic Hall of Fame, the South Carolina Hall of Fame, and the NutraSweet Hall of Fame. By 2002, Turner passed the two million dollar mark in career earnings. She actively toured with the LPGA until 2008.

Turner stays on top of her diabetes by regularly checking her blood sugar and carrying snacks with her wherever she goes. Having managed her diabetes for over 40 years, she is an example of how even people with the busiest lifestyles can stay healthy with diabetes.
